Comthago VDL is a son of Grand Prix stallion Comme il Faut, himself a son of Cornet Obolensky and bred out of the legendary mare Ratina Z. Through his dam line, Comthago also carries the valuable blood of Carthago and Caretino. His dam competed at 1.30m level, while his granddam Joyce I performed internationally at Grand Prix level.

Comthago himself has proven to possess exceptional jumping qualities. He combines a powerful take-off, tremendous scope, and excellent technique with carefulness and a modern canter. Under Hessel Hoekstra, he achieved notable results including a silver medal at the Dutch Championships and victory in the Grand Prix of Ommen.

Comthago is also making his mark as a sire. His oldest offspring are now competing successfully at international level, with several already performing at 1.40–1.45m level. They stand out for their scope, powerful take-off, quality canter, and rideability.
